Middle management will reorganise around AI agents before it shrinks.
Reasoning
Managers exist to coordinate tasks, people and information. AI agents take over the coordination of tasks first, because tasks are the easiest part of work to specify. That changes what a manager is for before it changes how many managers a company needs.
The mechanism: once agents handle routing, reporting and follow-up, a manager’s value moves to judgement, accountability and people. Organisations will first redraw roles around that shift. Only later, once the new shape is proven, will they reduce layers.
